How I make stimboards!

hi! i had a couple of messages asking how i make boards, so i thought i'd make a pretty elaborate breakdown on my methods!! ive been doing this since... probably around 2016/2017 ;w;

may be slightly image heavy and long! but... lets get into it!

Step one: Decide your theme! this part is super easy lol just figure out what your theme is! characters (or objects or whatever) usually go in the middle of the board. if you're using someone elses art PLEASE dont forget to link the source!! directly, not just pinterest!! I try and use official art as much as possible.

Step two: Plan your colours! I use a 3x3 grid for this if im making a traditional sized board!

here it is empty and a filled in example! feel free to save my empty one if you want lol you can just edit it in paint. keeping it balanced is for the best! it makes it more pleasing

some more examples of colour schemes! balance is key!

Step three: finding gifs and setting the board up

DO NOT USE PINTEREST!!! AND DO NOT PUT YOUR SOURCES DOWN AS PINTEREST

and for the love of primus dont put "credit to the gif makers" or "credit to the owners". please.

okay. now ive said that lets get into it. id say tumblr and tenor are two of the places i use the most. its as simple as looking up the type of gif or the colour you want. example would be: pink stim, red stim, food stim, slime stim etc!

dont forget to save the sources!!! try your best to go back to the source as much as possible. this usually means clicking through stim boards which is VERY annoying. but go back to the original gif poster if possible, unless the gif or blog has been deleted :(

this is much easier on PC. i just drag the gifs into a little grid directly on my desktop with the coloured grid above it as a guide for sources i keep a .txt file open to save the sources. the "x" marks spots where i havent filled in a gif yet

pro tip: if you're using multiple of the same kind of gifs, make sure to put them on opposite sides for balance.

example! if the yellow square is a slime gif make sure to put it like the grid on the left. the grid on the right is unbalanced and makes it look awkward

does this make sense? basically, balance is key.

also dont be afraid to colour shift if you cant find stuff in the right colour :p speaking of! to crop gifs into squares, edit, change size and colour shift use ezgif.com!

Step four: posting!

upload all your gifs, make sure theyre in order and add sources! the easiest part! to add sources simply highlight the text and click the "inline link" button!

make sure to tag! you can copy and paste these tags if you want a baseline!

I’ve been thinking about sending you an anon for awhile! I wanted to say that when I first say your Otohan/Imogen fics i was really confused on why- but then one night I was bored so I began reading them and absolutely fell in love with your writing. The way you write Otohan to begin with and the relationship you’ve conjured up is kind of insane in a really good way. I don’t know what I was expecting, but I’m very happy I gave a ship I was very against a shot because you are very incredible.

I’m looking forward to more information on the judicator au! I know you’re working on it with someone else (I’m pretty sure I remember seeing that) so I wish you both the best with it. Wow, talk about making my morning (day, week, month, year)! I honestly cannot thank you enough for not only giving my writing and this ship a chance, but also taking the time to send me such a kind and wonderful message to let me know. Messages like this seriously mean the world to me, so genuinely, thank you so much.

The one thing about planning a fic in full like this before publishing it is that every snippet I could share feels like a spoiler. So instead, please accept these random scraps of worldbuilding details and tidbits!

First and foremost, I truly would not be writing this AU without @inomakani. She encouraged me to go wild in our DMs talking about it, helped me solidify a lot of the plot details, and offered her own ideas whenever I got stuck deep-diving into the nitty gritty details (as I so often do). For example, she helped conceptualize Imogen's pseudo-permanent dorm room with a very cool and cozy layout. Here's just a tiny piece of the amazing floorplan she made that she'll likely post in full when the fic is published.

To further emphasize how awesome this whole project of hers was (because she really did plan ALL of Imogen's room; I simply gave the final 'ok'), here's my far simpler layout of the Aydinlan Seminary's campus:

Furthermore, Ino has contributed immensely to the wider worldbuilding (something she truly excels at). As a sort of silly but no less brilliant example, here's one of the cantrips she came up with for the in-universe encyclopedia of kink, Mistress' Magical Manual of Kink (mentioned in this snippet of how Imogen finds the book to begin with):

I would also absolutely be remiss if I didn't give Imogen glasses in the "Imogen is a Huge Nerd AU" (they're round, bronze-colored, and wire-framed, attached to a matching chain she wears around her neck because the bridge is just a little too wide and frequently slips down her nose; Professor Kai gave her his old pair when her and Liliana first arrived at the Seminary, and at this point it's a sentimental quirk Imogen can't bring herself to fix). The frames and temples are etched with teeny glyphs that provide Darkvision as well as the ability to magnify (and yes, please imagine that Imogen's eyeballs appear comically large when that spell is activated lol).

And finally, while I can't share much about Otohan themself and all the theorizing we've done on judicators in general, I can share this little detail about one of the more passive abilities they have, since it's mentioned in the opening of the fic.

Hi! That's from 140122 Haru Hana Magazine Vol 22 Interview. As for full translations for the who would you take to a Desert Island Question, this is what I can find:

Q: If you had to go to a deserted island, which member would you bring with you? Please state the reason.

JIN: I’ll bring Jungkook. First he’s strong and he usually carries around all of my necessities so he’s been a great help. 

JUNGKOOK: I also choose Jin hyung. Hyung is a good cook and will put to good use the things I bring over. 

RM: I choose V because he’s loud so I won’t be lonely. J-Hope too because he’s very optimisic. It feels like he’s going to say to me, “There’s hopes of living!” (laughs) 

J-HOPE: If I’m with Jimin, I think we’ll be able to make things smoothly.

One year back on Tumblr

So, I am a little late on this since my one year mark was on the 21st. I originally wanted to do something fun for my one year anniversary but I realized that I just am burnt out at the moment. I am sure that you've noticed the lack of content- and I am sorry. I am hoping soon.

Instead, I've decided to make a post for some of the highlights since I've come back to tumblr. I've met so many wonderful people that I know that I wouldn't have had the honor to meet otherwise. I just want to list some of my mutuals and also artists and writers I've had the opportunity to find and interact with that i think you should all check out their content if you haven't already.

I am going to separate this by fandom lol because I love you all but I tend to lose myself in trying to remember everyone sometimes.

While trying to grapple with the deaths of his Aunt & Uncle, be a super-hero, take care of his siblings, make enough money to support them, doge the questions his friends give him on all his injury's, not starve to death because of his stupid metabolism, try to ignore his stupidly cute new lab partner, get along with the new vigilante on the block, and make sure the avengers don't find out his identity and/or kill him.

It's a lot to say the least. Will Peter be able to trust and reach out for help before its too late or will the presser of everything slowly crush him?

This ended up being long I hope you enjoy the read!

Fair warning not everything is a one-to-one with how I see the characters, because Zoey sees them as real people and I see them from a fiction perspective. For example, real life me thinks Nagito is a great character and the game wouldn't be the same without him, but Zoey obviously sees him as a(n attempted) murderer who shouldn't be allowed to walk around free. So dont take everything I say to mean I hate the character. Except for Mahiru, I actually cant stand Mahiru irl.

Btw, important to note that I mention my fanfic (that I'm currently still writing) a lot in this, and that it's pretty canon-divergent.

-Monokuma isn't there at first and the killing game doesn't start until at least one week into being on the island, maybe two weeks. So for a while they're just supposed to follow Usami's goal: make friends with everybody.

-Zoey is the special ed student who gets "accommodations" from Usami. Usami is supposed to make sure Zoey understands what's going on and help her if she needs it. Usami is a sweetheart, but she clearly doesn't know what she's doing and usually babies Zoey when she doesn't need it and then leaves Zoey alone or fails to help when she actually does need something. Hey, at least it's not too different from Zoey's pas special educators! :D Funny enough, the accommodations thing is made into one of the rules, and when Monokuma takes over he actually has to fulfill these accommodations as well. Of course he takes advantage of this opportunity in order to mock Zoey and manipulate her. Oh hey, this is also not too different from Zoey's past special educators! Haha...oof.....

-Monokuma has Zoey in a weird sort of mental trap, and I'd rather show it in the actual fic than talk about it here; I only mention it for Byakuya's piece.

-The only canon death I've kept is Twogami, who dies the exact way he does in the game, but everyone else stays alive for most or all of the fanfic, and it's still a simulation anyway. I'm a softy and I hate killing off characters in my writing. I only killed off Twogami because they were too competent and would have solved Zoey's Monokuma Trap too fast, and I didn't know how to nerf that. Sorry Twogami. You were too competent for Danganronpa.

-characters dont die as punishment for killing. Alter Ego is in this story and she got to the rules before Monokuma did, so she blocked violence and death as punishments (oh and believe me she tried to block Monokuma himself, but it didn't work and he showed up anyway). Monokuma still insists that the killing game goes on, and his strategy to get around being nerfed is to continue to get the students to kill and distrust each other, stirring up drama and chaos. Trials are still a thing too (and he'll find any excuse to hold them since they can be a source of petty drama).

Nagito: They start off as acquaintences. Zoey thought he was alright, and actually one of the most easygoing people to get along with, though her gut feeling told her not to trust him too much. After he reveals his more murderous side, she avoids him like the plague. She admires that Kazuichi and Nekomaru tied him up and said that if she were there she would have kicked him while he was down (which got Kazuichi scared for Zoey's safety, so she promised she wouldn't go into the room where he was tied up). When someone lets him go later, Zoey avoids him like the plague and is disgusted with him, though he's neutral to Zoey.

Hiyoko: Hiyoko picks on Zoey, not nearly as much as Mikan but she gets under Zoey's skin by calling her "stupid" (I'm wondering if it would be out of character for her to say the r-slur. I feel like she would.) Zoey starts off thinking Hiyoko is a little kid and is way more lenient and gentle to calling her out ("stop saying that….that's mean… you could…. hurt someone's feelings….. thank goodness…. you didn't hurt….. mine" Zoey says, crying in between the words. "This is just …allergies.") Zoey is a lot nastier in responding to the insults when Hiyoko admits to being seventeen years old, though Zoey doesn't hate her as much as Mahiru.

Mahiru: ). Ohhh boy. Here we go. Anon I apologize in advance if you like Mahiru, because I portray her character way less kindly than most of the fandom content I've seen of her. Zoey probably thinks of her as worse than she is, but Mahiru in my story is baaad, and she really brings out the worst in Zoey. For every bit that Kazuichi is a sweet girl in bitch's clothing, Mahiru is the bitch in sweet girl's clothing. She's able to get away with saying and doing so much nasty shit because she can lean on a reputation of "nice, good girl who's 'empowered' and just 'tells it like it is' to the boys." But really, she's mean, pushy, physically aggressive, rude, insulting, mean to "weirdos" and meaner to "boys." And she gets away with it because she's a "just a nice girl." Zoey doesn't fall for her shit, which confuses and pisses her off because she's used to girls being easygoing with her. Though Zoey assumes that she's a "queen bee" she's more of a slightly less extroverted queen bee's best friend type. Zoey is mad enough to want to attack her character; both in the "I'm going to call you out" way and the "I'm going to punch you if you open your mouth one more time" way. Zoey can be cruel and loud when she thinks someone deserves a kick to the face.* *(I must emphasize, me as a teenager is NOT the same person as me as an adult. I stopped acting aggressive at 17 years old, initially from a fear that I might do something that gets me sent to jail and ruins my life, and I eventually learned how to cope with my sense of justice in ways that dont involve threats or violence or (unless I have to) direct confrontation. It strongly helps that I'm not going to high school anymore. Irl high school was a nightmare for me.)

Fuyuhiko: Eventual Friendship, possibly a rocky friendship though I'm still working on this one. Zoey is pretty sensitive to yelling and insults, so when Fuyuhiko's initial attitude is "everybody leave me the hell alone!" Zoey listens. Though normally Zoey would stand up to someone who was insulting and threatening people, the first time Zoey and Fuyuhiko met Zoey tried to protect the "little guy" (from Mahiru) and then Peko intercepted and made it clear to Zoey that Fuyuhiko doesn't need (Zoey's) protection and that for Zoey's own safety she should stay away from him and not talk to him. So at first they avoid each other. I'm still working out a later scene though, where Zoey's gut feeling leads to her following him around to protect him and unknowingly stopping Fuyuhiko from playing Twilight Syndrome Murder Case. I have planned some progression into a friendship with Fuyuhiko and Kazuichi as well!

Peko: Friendship. Peko understands Zoey's desire to protect people, and lowkey appreciated the attempt to protect Fuyuhiko, but she also thinks Zoey is too careless and should learn to discern situations better before jumping in to defend somebody (yeah, a little hypocritical coming from her, but in Peko's defense at least Peko is a trained swordwoman, while Zoey is very physically sensitive and has no weapon or combat training). She intimidated Zoey into staying away from Fuyuhiko, and even though she scared Zoey a bit herself, Zoey did continue to talk to her and they are Okay Friends. Zoey once asked Peko to train her in using weapons and Peko said no. Teruteru: Mixed Feelings, Pseudo-Friendship but Zoey is easily creeped out by him. Teruteru thinks Zoey is funny and adorably charming and roots for her and Kazuichi to get together. It's so funny, he might have one of the highest opinions of Zoey (obviously less than Kazuichi's and a little less than Ibuki's) and Zoey is creeped out by him. She wants to like Teruteru but he creeps her out. She tries to assume that he doesn't know he's creeping anybody out (like with Kazuichi) but Kazuichi assures Zoey that no, Teruteru is a creep. I write Teruteru as a "creepy little bastard" /affectionate, and he does say icky things like in the game because I think it's funny (sorry xD). Despite his ickyness and occasional smug attitude, he can be a good friend and actually helps Zoey and Kazuichi in a couple of situations, and he is the only one to realize without being told that Kazuichi is a girl (and he decided on his own to keep it a secret to protect the babyqueer). He does switch from flirty comments about Zoey to teasing her about her crush on Kazuichi, but she made him promise to keep that a secret and he holds up to it. Zoey and Kazuichi are Barbie dolls he keeps trying to smush together to make them kiss.

Sonia (who comes out as a trans guy named Coby later): Strangers to Enemies-Ish??? to Friendship-ish??? arc. Coby is Zoey's kryptonite: Zoey thinks "Sonia" is a mean popular girly girl that is probably going to bully her, and doesn't give him a chance at friendship until she feels forced into talking to him. Coby tries a little to be friends with Zoey and Zoey avoids him, which confuses him and hurts his feelings a little bit but he's just not sure what to think of Zoey. There's also Zoey's reason of "I'm jealous of Kazuichi's crush on you and I dont want to act unfairly mean at you so I wont talk to you unless you talk to me." They do become friends later, though he's on thin ice if he insults Kazuichi, so Coby agrees not to do that. He is rooting for her and Zoey, mainly to get Kazuichi off his back (ironically he says this after Kazuichi's already decided she doesn't care about Sonia any more). He's autistic too. I see him and Kazuichi as two autistic kids who were socially trained in opposite directions and fail in communicating to each other; I don't think of either of them as all bad or all good, they were both being self-centered and immature but they also are both good people. This fic doesn't villainize Coby, though later it shows Coby's own creepier side.

Edit 7/7/2024, a year later!: Damn, the entry I wrote for Mahiru is more mean than I remember, yeesh. Irl me got more sympathetic to Mahiru in the process of writing for her and thinking more about her character motivations and processing that mess that was the Twilight case. She's still the antagonist and Zoey the character is still this level of mad at her but I try to balance her and Zoey out. And IRL me does not hate Mahiru now even though I did last year.

Today in Arsay Nun's "I don't know this bit of miqo'te culture and this point im too afraid to ask" is how the seeker name system works and that she could have dropped the y in shtola's name months ago

Y’mhitra being the one to question why Arsay keeps using their tribe signifier if she and Shtola are so close and Arsay being like “???? That’s not just a nickname???” (Poor girl was raised by Lalafell where [I'm pretty sure] it's rude to shorten someone's name*, so nicknames arent something she's used to) *[I remember reading that somewhere at least but I cant find the source for that. Please correct me if im wrong!]

Anways queue Arsay getting a lecture from Y'mhitra regarding seeker naming conventions and the tribe name origins. (She'll have to write to Emrara and ask what her father's full name was) This get's accompanied by Y'mhitra saying Arsay can drop the y in her name too. After all the summoner quests they've gone through, they've become pretty good friends!

Arsay would question whether she should wait for permission from Y'shtola instead of accidentally upsetting her. Would she not have said something if Arsay using the tribe name bothered her? Y'mhitra shrugs, sighting her sister's tendency for maintaining walls between herself and other people. She gives Arsay a mini pep talk, telling her she should be the one to help break down some walls.

Arsay is still fairly nervous about it but she goes off to find her gf. When they link up, Arsay gives a tentative "Hi, Shtola". Y'shtola's ears twitch. Arsay fears for the worse, only to be met with a soft smile and a simple "hello Arsay". If the slight raising of her tail was anything to go by, Shtola was pleased to be greeted that way by Arsay.

Not really a cult, due to the au being based off of an indie webcomic, I kinda have to follow the world rules. They're all demons to say the least. They kidnap people to possess and parade in the circus and then kill them when they're too weak to not leave witnesses.

And Ignacio who got killed cause John stabbed him (More like the demon possessing him) they managed to exorcise the demon but Iggy is dead lol

The officers are also part time demon hunters. Roy and Robert became demon hunters and Radford and Kevin help with all that.

so i realized that any gif that used to have the source where if you click the gif to open a new page, it used to go to where you went as the source of said gif and not the blog and now google and tumblr are saying those gifs are mine and im sitting here like damn yall deactivated all these blogs so heres this.

btw for those new here: the regenerations posts where the gifs are for each face of my ocs? those are deactivated blogs now. and i dont know where the fuck they are except for like the most recent ones.

and most of those gifs are from gif hunts that were around in 2014 and back so. and just roughly ever gif was from a post that i have reblogged where it contains said source of gif [if i havent made a specific gif myself via the tag mv: mungifs]

so if i start popping up as the source of these gifs after using google image search source and you dont see where that gif is originated from thats not this one - its afucking lie i was there but the original owner of the gifs and tumblrs shoddy tag search make it the true source deactivated and that post gone unless preserved by a reblog and thats all before the tumblr updates.

so if you find the sources for all the other ones which is like 300+ (because i only did scott mcclure and david tennant and park si eun (1980) gifs for vin/v but everybody else is everybody elses so anything made in 2010 2014 and you made a photopost via link url: its now gone. and now you are the owner instead of the source of the person who made the gif in the first place so i despise that lil subtle development. because now i've lost essentially a big limb of bookmarked sources via links)

ramble about Listen please!!! i'm bored and I love reading rambling analyses of episodes

oh god please strap in because i’m gonna talk a whole lot of nonsense to you

listen is literally one of my favorite doctor who episodes ever. obviously the super fun plot-driven and action packed episodes like turn left, journeys end, the end of time, heaven sent/hell bent, and spyfall are high on my list of favorites, but listen has a special place in my heart that i cant really describe coherently but ill do my best.

also gonna offer my analysis of the episode for those who maybe just don't Get the episode or see it the way i do. i know it's an often hated episode so i’m hoping maybe i can change some minds here 👁

okay so the overarching theme of the episode for me is that everyone is scared of something in their lives - be it something big that takes over your whole life or small everyday fears - but regardless of the size or importance of those fears, they are always a product of our own creation. it’s also kind of a metaphor for anxiety i think? and other similar types of disorders? that we’re scared of stuff that isn't even real sometimes, it’s just something that our mind has crafted for us

let me explain: the doctor goes on about being afraid of the "monster under the bed" that he often dreams about. in the episode, we find out that the monster under the bed that he is referring to was actually clara visiting him as a child and grabbing his foot when he stepped out of bed. like if the doctor didn't become what they became and met the people they met.. the whole interaction would not have happened at all!! its paradoxical!! and we love that!!! the whole thing the doctor is afraid of is a product of itself

clara has her own fears to work through in the episode as well, her date with danny is going terribly. its definitely not comparable in terms of scale when you put it next to the doctor’s fear here, but that’s exactly the point! big vs small fears but all are fears nonetheless

which is where the “fear is a constant companion” line fits.. that people are always afraid of something even if it’s something miniscule to someone else. i just love it because also a big theme of the episode is “fear is a superpower” right? that we all have fears, but instead of cowering in a corner and letting it consume us, we should instead use the fear to do great things!! fear can make you fast, jump higher, fear can make you kind whatever the quote is from the episode lmao you get the idea

fear making you kind hits my heart in the right spot okay because that’s literally the doctor’s whole motivation for what they do! they help people! they save planets!! they use their fear to do good things!!! (thinking about the parallel between the doctor and the master here.. “you want me to be scared because you're scared of everything” or w/e that quote is. but i wont detract this post from it’s original purpose by getting all thoschei on you)

so i think by the end of it, the doctor realizes that him being afraid is a product of his own imagination. he went to the end of the dang universe to find the source, but still managed to be afraid even when there was absolutely nothing outside of the door. (which tbh.. the source of the actual tangible thing he feared was with him the whole time! because it was clara!!)

and clara worked through her fear of ruining the date with danny, she goes back to apologize to him and he does the same, they make up, they make out, everything is happy

i think also partially the reason she Does go back to danny to make things right is because of meeting orson? that there’s hints that he is a descendent of clara and/or danny.. so she has seen that possible future and either genuinely wants it to happen or assumes that it has to? 

which brings me to another point about the episode.. i see a lot of people hating on it Because of the orson thing.. that they hinted at danny and clara staying together and having children, etc, etc but then killed danny like 6 episodes later?? i get it i guess.. but for me that really doesn't matter lmao?? \

how many times have we seen a potential future for the earth/the human race? that was either good or bad?? or just in general where someone made a choice to rewrite time or saw a potential future?? the long game? and bad wolf/the parting of the ways? new earth??? gridlock? utopia? last of the time lords/the sound of drums was literally a whole year that never happened?? the doctor’s daughter? the waters of mars? the hungry earth/cold blood?? the angels take manhattan?? journey to the centre of the tardis? heaven sent/hell bent? smile? oxygen? extremis/the pyramid at the end of the world/the lie of the land?? orphan 55?? 

these all can’t coexist like none of them are certain.. time can be rewritten it’s literally such a big theme of the show!! like orson was just a potential future, he wasn’t guaranteed. plus.. what are the chances that he isn’t related to either of them and the details just match up that well? coincidences happen! or maybe he’s from a parallel universe!! anything can happen.

idk i just see that as the biggest critique of the episode but for me it really isn’t a dealbreaker

enough of the small rant i want to conclude my analysis of the episode

i love quirky and different episodes like listen where the alien/threat/whatever is something more introspective? that it makes you think a bit before it clicks? 

also i just love the whole idea of clara going back in time to comfort baby doctor because esp now with what we know about the timeless child i think they deserve it 🥺 (i’ve made some posts about wanting the doctor to visit themself as the timeless child and do something similar.. not interfere.. just give some encouragement because they need it. but again.. i wont derail the original purpose of this post)

i also love how she tells the doctor to never look back at where they had been.. i like to think that he didn't ever look but something in him Knows.. i love the way he smiles at the end when he underlines “LISTEN” on his chalkboard. like the memory of that night came back to him but it was a little different than he remembered, there was a familiar voice in it this time. but it might just be the effects of time on an old memory like that, filling in the blanks with what’s familiar now.

and i just love the ending so much, after the tension of waiting for the reveal of who the child was that clara was hiding under the bed, we get to see her speak to the child softly, telling him about dreams and fears, and how it will shape him in the future. and the way the music builds with the voiceover and clara is hugging the doctor at the console and she’s going back to danny and they kiss and it’s all coming together into a crescendo with the quote “fear makes companions of us all”

i just love the callback to an unearthly child.. it just always warms my heart when there’s a reference to classic who because this silly show has been around for so long and it has done so much for me and i just have a lot of emotions okay

so yeah.. hopefully literally any of this makes sense i’m just rambling. hopefully this is everything you hoped for when you sent this ask lmao

Intro & attempt at TLDR

Hey everyone! Today I’d like to tell y’all something about Open Source Software, and also Why this should matter to you! This’ll probably be the first post of a series I intend to do, because I believe the Studyblr community, even the non-nerd folks, could really benefit from switching some things out in their digital environment. Since this is a long post, I attempted to summarise it below, please do read on if you have the spoons tho!

TLDR?

FOSS stands for “Free and Open Source Software” the “free” part doesn’t necessarily mean it’s free as in free pizza, but mostly means free as in freedom.

There’s a humongous amount of variants on this concept, but the core of FOSS specifically is the four freedoms:

1. To run the program however you want and for whatever you want

2. To study how the program works and to change it in whatever way you want

3. To be able to share it with whomever you feel like

4. To be able to share your modified version with whomever you want

There’s a whole host of software licenses built around these concepts, you can check those out at the Open Source Initiative website, or at Choose A License. Both have a good summary of what they all stand for.

Open Source software is used for a lot of products, nearly every single webserver is an Apache Linux server, Google chrome is built on top of their open source chromium (google is still the devil, but y’know, it’s an example), and even deep deep down, Apple computers run on top of a Linux Kernel. Many more can be listed, but I won’t do that otherwise this isn’t a TLDR anymore.

Now, Why is this important for you? The Open Source Initiative summed it up real nicely already, but heres a short paraphrase:

Control & Security. If software is open source then you can check if it really works the way it does, and to make sure it’s not spying on you. Even if you don’t have the skills for it, someone else who does will be able to check. Also if you don’t like how something works in a program, then you’ll be able to change it or find someone else’s changed version that you like more.

Training. People who want to learn programming can use the code to see what makes programs tick, as well as use it as a guide for their own projects.

Stability. Because everything’s out in the open, that means someone else can take up maintaining a project or make a successor of it, in case the original developers suddenly quit working on it. This is especially important when it’s software that’s absolutely critical for certain tasks.

Community. It’s not just one program. It’s a lot of people working together to make, test, use, and promote a project they really love. Lots of projects end up with a dedicated fanbase that helps support the developers in continuing to work on the software.

I’d like to add one more tho: Privacy, which ties in a lot with the security part. Nowadays with protests going on and everything being online due to the pandemic, folks have been and will be confronted much more with the impact of privacy, and lack thereof. Open Source software means that if any company or group tries to spy on you, then you and anyone who feels like checking, will be able to know and take action on it. Terminology: Let’s get that out of the way first

Open Source: The source code that a program is made up of is freely accessible, anyone can look at it and check whether it works well enough or to make sure it doesn’t spy on you.

FOSS: Free and Open Source Software. This doesn’t mean that you don’t need to pay for it, it’s free as in freedom and free speech, not free pizza.

There are four freedoms associated with FOSS:

The freedom to run the program as you wish, for any purpose (freedom 0).

The freedom to study how the program works, and change it so it does your computing as you wish (freedom 1). Access to the source code is a precondition for this.

The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help others (freedom 2).

The freedom to distribute copies of your modified versions to others (freedom 3).

By doing this you can give the whole community a chance to benefit from your changes. Access to the source code is a precondition for this.

FLOSS: Free and Libre Open Source Software. This time it is “free” as in free pizza. The “libre” is french for “free” as in freedom.

GRATIS: Sometimes people use this word to mean “free” as in free pizza. Usually alongside “FOSS”

Licenses : A license is something that tells others what they can or cannot do with your code. Licenses also apply to art and literature, those are copyright licenses. There are many different software licenses and I’m not going to be able to list them all.

The biggest players however are:

Apache License 2.0

The 3-Clause BSD License

GNU General Public License (also known as GPL)

MIT License

Mozilla Public License 2.0

There’s even more and you can find a list of them Here on the Open Source Initiative site There’s so many licenses that there’s even a Choose A License site, where you can pick a license depending on what you want it to achieve

Who and/or what even uses open source software?

You don’t need to be some nerd to benefit from Open Source software, in fact, you’re using open source software right now! The biggest example is the whole entire internet. Websites are stored on servers, and nearly every single webserver is a Linux server. The second biggest browser Firefox is open source, and even google chrome is built on top of “chromium” an open source base. If you dont use an iPhone, then you’re probably on an Android phone. Guess what? Android is part of the Android Open Source Project, which is then built upon a GNU/Linux base. All Open Source. Chromebooks? Built on top of a Linux kernel (like a non-patented engine you could put into any motor vehicle you’d like). Heck, even Apple computers are, at their core, built on top of a Linux kernel.

Neat apps you may wanna check out!

I’ve made a little list of apps that might be especially useful for studyblr folks, but depending on how well this post does I’ll probably make some more posts for specific apps.

TiddlyWiki, has a bajillion different ways to organise your thoughts, and also a lot of variant builds out there. Check out their table of contents if you feel lost! There’s versions available for most big browsers, as well as windows, linux, mac, android, and iOS.

AnyType, is an app that looks and almost exactly like notion, but is much more decentralised. They’re currently still in development but if you want to support them, sign up for early access and give them some feedback so they know what works and doesn’t! They’re still in closed alpha, but are intending to give beta access to about 100 folks at a time throughout 2021, so please sign up if this looks interesting to you!

Trilium Notes, is slightly more like a “notebook”, however you can arrange your notes in nearly infinitely deep folders. You can use things like Relation Maps & Link Maps to visualise your notes and how they go together. There’s even more they do and I just cant list it all, so go check out their stuff for a more comprehensive overview! Works on windows, linux, and (unsupported) mac

LibreOffice and ONLYOFFICE are two office suites that function just as well as micro$oft office, often Even Better in my experience. I’ve used LibreOffice for years now and honestly? never going back. OnlyOffice is technically free (as in pizza), but it’s a slight hassle to get everything set up, cause you need to set it up on a server. They have a paid and hosted version available with educational discounts, but honestly i’d go with LibreOffice.

OnePile, is an app I haven’t used myself since it only runs on Apple stuff. But I’ve heard a lot of good things about it so that’s why it’s in here. It looks like it works similar to most general “note taking notebook” apps. Looks really pretty too honestly.

EtherPad, is similar to ONLYOFFICE, however this one’s a lot more focused on specifically text documents. Works with real-time collaboration which is really neat.

Anything that FramaSoft has going on. They’re a non-profit organisation, dedicated to promoting digital freedom. A lot of open source cloud related things are not really useful to people who don’t have the time and/or money to set up a whole-ass server. That’s where FramaSoft comes in, they do it for you. Just about everything they offer (here’s a full overview) are free (as in free pizza). They also have a separate site to help you get started!

It’s not free to run it all on their side, so if you find yourself interested in using their services please try to support them any way you monetarily can! (they even have a “minetest” server (not minecraft, deeeefinitely not minecraft))

Joplin!! Which is also what I used to write this post so I wouldn’t have to use The Tumble’s post writing thing. It’s good for taking notes, has a bunch of neat plug-ins, and can also sync with a variety of cloud services!

Nextcloud For if you want to go just that little bit further on the open source and the privacy. Nextcloud has honestly way too many features for me to list, but the important parts are that it’s a nigh perfect replacement for office365, and probably even GSuite. The one caveat is that you either gotta host it yourself, or get someone else to host it for you. Framasoft (mentioned above), has a nextcloud instance. It works on just about every single platform, and can integrate with an absurd amount of services. Here’s a list of providers that work with nextcloud, and what different apps they have installed on their server.

I personally use Disroot, because they’re a local (as in, my country) non-profit that offer about 2gb of free storage, and then for about 15 cents per GB per month you can get more storage if you want. They also have an email service which is hella neat. Their one main rule is Do Not Use For Business Purposes, because they’re here to help the individual folks, not companies.
